Dad Burkhardt

This page is dedicated to My Father - James Franklin Burkhardt (born 1934) whose passion is to till the land.

Dad lived in the backroom pantry area of the log cabin his last 2 years of high school to help my great-grandparents farm - around 1950-1953. That is how he met my mother. She lived on a farm on Reitz Road just a few miles away.

The best stock a man can invest in, is the stock of a farm; the best shares are plow shares; and the best banks are the fertile banks of a rural stream; the more these are broken the better dividends they pay.
H.W. Beecher

I’m Just a Farmer, Plain and Simple

By Bobby Collier

I'm just a farmer,
Plain and simple.
Not of a royal birth
But rather, a worker of the earth.
I know not of riches
But rather, of patches on my britches
I know of draught and rain,
Of pleasure and pain.
I know of the good and the bad,
The happy and the sad.
I am a man of emotions.
A man who loves this land,
And the beauty of its sand.
I know of a spring's fresh flow
And autumn's golden glow,
Of a newborn calf's hesitation,
And the eagle's destination.
I know of tall pines,
And long, waiting lines.
Of the warmth of campfires,
And the agony of flat tires.
But I am a man who loves his job
And the life I live.
I am a man who works with God,
I cannot succeed without his help,
For you see,
I'm just a farmer
Plain and simple.

REMEDIES

GingerGinger plant

Ginger has many uses in the home remedies department and can be used to help arthritis, diarrhea, flu, headache, heart and menstrual problems, diabetes, stomach upset and motion sickness.

Old Timey Remedies

Sore Throat?  Peel a fresh onion, insert into a "Wool" sock, and wrap around your neck. Immediate relief!

Burned Yourself? Place a freshly cut potato onto the burn. The potato cools the pain and turns the potato brownish-black!

Joint Pain? Rub a small amount of castor oil into the affected areas, morning and night. Results may be immediate, or may take a few days.

Ear Pain? Sweet oil and garlic oil work magic for infected ears. After placing a few drops in the ear canal, results should be immediate.

High Fever? Using rags, tie slices of onion to the bottoms of your feet. Fever should come down in a short time.

Hair Issues? To shave unwanted hair or cut finger/toenails, if you want them to grow back slowly shave or cut when the moon is waning (after a full moon while the moon is getting smaller). If you want faster growth (like women especially who get their hair cut or trimmed and want it to grow fast because they want it longer yet without split ends) do the opposite. Cut it when the moon is growing (waxing).

Sinus Problems? Take a teaspoon of salt and put it in a cup of warm water. Stir till dissolved then snort it through one nostril at a time. The solution goes back and down the throat, takes the gunk with it, and gets spit out. The salt also is a purifier that cleanses and soothes irritated tissues.

Pimples? Take the white skin inside the shell of a raw egg and put on the pimple and let it dry. It will shrink the pimple and draw the pus to the top. It is drying.

Canker sores inside the mouth? Put a small piece of alum on it. It may not taste the best, but the sore should shrink and become less painful. Granny had alum with her spices.

Witch Hazel is used in herbal remedies as an astringent and to relieve hemorrhoid and bruise pain, sprains and strains of muscles, and laryngitis.

Sore Feet? Soak them in a tub of warm water with Epsom Salts.

Cats/kittens with sore eyes? Use a mild solution of boric acid and water and wash the cat's eyes with it.

Ingrown toenail on your big toe? Cut a "V" in the center of the nail and file it smooth so it doesn't snag on anything and the nail will grow toward the "V" from the sides ultimately filling in the "V" and healing the ingrown nail. I did that for years and finally the nail doesn't ingrow anymore.

For a cold or if you've been out in the bitter cold and need to warm up, don't forget the "Hot Toddie" (Dad and Grandpa used to do this in the winter when they were working in the barn). One recipe is a tablespoon of whiskey (Dad and Grandpa may have used a shot!) and a tablespoon of sugar in a cup of good, warm water and drink it. Another recipe calls for 1 tbsp honey, 3/4 glass tea, 2 shots brandy, and 1 slice lemon. Brew tea and fill a tall glass 3/4 full. Mix in honey. Mix in brandy shots. Add lemon slice and enjoy. The American Lung Association now recommends avoiding treating the common cold with alcoholic beverages as they cause dehydration.

Nasty smells on your hands? like onions or kerosene... Try rubbing your hands over anything chrome like kitchen or bathroom faucets and the smell will disappear.

Bugs in your trees? Paint the trunk of trees about 2-3 feet up with a white "lime"stone wash to keep bugs out. This was a very common practice in the early to mid 1900's - so much so that it kind of turned into a style. Lime also keeps snakes out of your yard if spread in grass and around foundation of a house.
